My mom, Fran
I grew up in Juneau. Later in life my mom, Fran, lived in Oregon and in 2005 was dying from terminal Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. When she had just a couple weeks left to live, her quality of life had diminished to the point where she chose to utilize Oregon’s Death with Dignity to end her life on her own terms. My stepfather and I were by her side as she peacefully drifted away. I am so grateful that she was able to die on her own terms in a peaceful manner rather than having to suffer needlessly for several more weeks. When my father moved away from Alaska not long after this happened, he chose Oregon over Washington because at that time Washington had not yet passed their own MAiD initiative.
